The Decision of Our Semester

Monday's class was one of the more interesting and extraordinary experiences of my two years in Baruch. As a class we were given the authority to decide on the professor would handle our grades from the first test. What made this decision so difficult, was the fact that as a class of 60 students we had to make a unanimous decision. So the student who got the highest mark and the student that got the lowest mark had to agree on what the professor should do with this test. There are various decision making techniques that we could have used to make an unanimous decision.

Chaos was certainly an issue as the decision making process began in the class. Once someone took charge and began asking everyone of their opinions, there was order in the class. Personally, I believe without the pressure of having to make a unanimous decision affected everyones ability to make a decision. Many of the students gave up the best possible method to improve their grade in order to have one method that would help the entire class at the same time. This can be considered the compromise method and it worked very well to make a unanimous decision for the entire class.

The accommodation method is another method that could have easily worked well with our situation. The class saw everyones needs and made a decision in which other's needs were more important then their own needs. This can be very similar to the compromise method and I believe both would help if we were to make a future unanimous decision as a class.

  1. I think most people accommodated and also either compromised or were in avoidance. The low scoring people had to take into consideration the high scorers and vice verse. So to make a utilitarian decision, everyone accommodated and collaborated. Some people who didn't speak were in avoidance, I guess maybe they did well on the test, or they thought the decision was never going to be made and it was pointless. But nevertheless, we came up with a decision that's a win-win for everyone.

  2. Luckily we were able to agree on something. I really wanted to figure out a decision for the 2nd test. We spent about 1 hour to come with a decision. Definitely wasn't an easy task but this is something we will face more decision making in the future. I'm glad the professor gave us this task because now I know how to handle with making an important decision. I liked the experience and i'm sure many of classmates did as well.

  3. Jack, I agree with you when you say that the fact we knew we needed to reach a decision as group at a 100% level put a lot of pressure on us and it changed the ways we normally would reach a decision. I also think that the time was not manage wisely since we couldn't discuss further if we wanted to see any changes on the 2nd exam, and we had to leave the decision to the professor's discretion.
